I Just Don't Get It

"So, Dad? I just don't get it.

"Get what, Bob?"

"When the baby grows inside the mama's tummy, how did it get there? I just don't get it."

"Well... to make a baby it takes part of a man and part of a woman together, but these are very small parts, like remember how we talked before about cells and how they divide? So one becomes two and two become four until they start forming into a baby. The baby stays in the mama for nine months until it gets ready for the world and then it comes out and grows up into a big boy, like Bob. Does that make sense?"

"So, Dad? Why would they make the droid control ship so easy for Anakin to blow up? He just flew in and blasted it and then all the droids didn't work and the war was over. I just don't get it."

"Well, Bob. That's what you call a plot hole."

  1. at lunch with friends, Science Guy created a snazzy paper dart out of a paper menu. their 4 year old eva was prompted to ask about how things stay in the sky. Queue an age appropriate physics of flight conversation.

miss 4 then turns to me and asks how the bubbles in her drink got there. to which I respond confidently: MAGIC!

she turned to science guy and they both raised their eyebrows in judgement of me.

    pfft.

  2. Yes, well. At least you parents today have the Google to look things up on when your children's questions get beyond your ability to answer.
Frankly, I like what SAS said. Hell. It's all magic to me.

  4. Absolutely hilarious. My co-workers are looking askance at me today in that "what you laughin' at Willis?" way.

  5. Haha--my nephew does the same thing. I give him a scientific answer in kid-speak, and then he turns around and says something like "Can I have Oreos now?"

  6. we always agonize over how to talk to children about the birds and the bees, and as soon as we start to explain it, they are off on another topic. Bob is the cutest ever.
