The Good Fight

"Hey, Dad! Watch this! Fight! Fight! Fight! I'm punching and fighting with my hands! See?"

"That's a little on the violent side, Bud. Didn't we talk about toning that down a little?"

"It's okay, Dad. I'm fighting germs."

Overheard at the Play-date

"Bob? Thanks for having me over for a play-date. My dad told me to stop asking him all the time about coming over to your house."

"My mom said that to me too about play-dates!"

"Yeah. It takes planning from our parents and that means a phone call or maybe an email."

"I know."

"So yeah, he told me I have to be patient."

"Mia? You really have to just keep asking anyway. That's how it really happens."

Loyalties

"Mom? Why isn't Miss Marguerita teaching my swimming class this time?"

"She's teaching a different class for this series. You have a new teacher now."

"Miss Laura?"

"Yeah. She seems nice."

"Miss Laura means nothing to me, Mom."

The Eyes

"I can shoot 2,009 lasers out of my eyes, Mom. I am telling you the truth."

"Is that right?"

"Yeah and I can do it faster than a spider can move."

"Whoa."

"And I am silent as flowers."

Mischief of One Kind and Another

photo from here

"Hey, Mom? Remember that time I did that joke on Daddy?"

"Which joke was that?"

"That time I put my booger in his ear."

"Yep. I remember."

"That was a good one. Want to hear a joke, Mom?"

"No thanks."

Decisions

"So, Mom? I have to tell you something."

"Sure."

"I made a decision."

"Okay."

"Today's secret ingredient is cheese."

"What does that mean, Bob?"

"You know what it means, Mom."

4:24am

photo from here

It was still dark outside when I woke up. I could feel Jeff sleeping at my side, his back rising with each breath. The dog shifted at my feet. I rolled over and discovered Bob in the bed. His Star Wars jammies glowed in the dark. His eyes fluttered while I watched him sleep, his little-boy hands balled into fists. He lifted his head and turned into the pillow and whispered, "Sandwich..."

Well Played

"... And then if the monster kicks me in the tummy, I'll kick him back in his tummy and then I can karate chop him and then..."

"Bob? It seems like most everything you talk about lately is sort of violent."

"You mean monsters and hitting and everything?"

"Yeah. It's making me think we might be reading too many Star Wars books. Can you try talking about some things that aren't about fighting?"

"Okay, Mom. What are we having for dinner? You mean like that?"

"Perfect."

"So really, Mom. What are we having for dinner?"

Art

"I made this for you at school, Mom."

"Wow. Thanks, honey. Will you tell me about it?"

"It's a nature-project-thing with beans and glue and wood."

"It's very cool."

"And lightning. There's lightning too."

"Look, Mom! I found a four leaf clover?"

"You did?"

"Yeah. Well, it only has three leaves but I'm pretty sure the leprechaun took the fourth one... It's still lucky, right?"

"Absolutely."

A Lesson Learned. Sort Of.

"Dad? We learned a song-thing at the supermarket field trip today."

"How's that go?"

"Eat... five... to stay... alive!"

"That's great! Five what?"

"What do you mean?"

"Eat five what to stay alive?"

"I don't know. I don't know that part. But stay alive!"

Dinner Talk

photo from here

"Dad? May I be excused?"

"Eat a couple more bites of your broccoli first."

"But I'm done."

"You need to eat your vegetables to get big and strong."

"But I don't want to be big and strong and grown up and have kids. I don't know how to that. How do you even do the have kids part?"

"You just figure it out as you go along, buddy."

Well... Yeah

photo from here

"What happened at school today?"

"Not too much, Mom. We had pretzels. All the parts of school were pretty much my favorite except for the bossing."

"Someone was bossing you?"

"Yeah. The girls. The girls were bossing me."

"Get used to that."

The Job

"Dad? Is it hard to have a kid?"

"Sometimes it is but it's a good kind of hard and my favorite job there is."

"Yeah. I thought it was super really, really, really, really, really hard."

"And good."

"And not so easy."

Sweet Dreaming

"Mom? Can you hold on to my arm while I fall asleep until I'm dreaming?"

"Sure, honey."

"Then, when I'm dreaming I can pull you into my dream and we can fly out of the window up to the roof of the house and get down my Frisbee that's stuck up there. We can take a ladder down if you want."

"I'm in."

Loophole

"What was the worst part of your day, Bob?"

"I think it was how I was a little shy with the new swimming teacher."

"Yeah? I think you handled it really well. What was the best part of your day?

"The part were we got ice cream."

"I liked that part too. I'll tell you my worst part was when you ran away from me in Von's and I couldn't find you. I was very worried."

"Mom? I didn't think about it, I just did it. Does that count?"

Blue Skies

"You know what's good about the sky, Mom?"

"Tell me."

"It never goes away."

"That's true."

"And it holds us all here so that we don't float up to the galaxy... but floating up might be fun too."

He Knows Things

photo from here

"Mom? Is your heart broken because you miss Pearl?"

"Yeah, a little. Where did you learn about broken hearts?"

"In Star Wars: Episode Three, Padme's heart gets broken by Anakin. Heart breaking means you're sad."

"It does."

"Yours will un-break later, right?"

Measured

"See how big the galaxy is, Mom?"

"I do."

"I measured. It's 100% wide and 200% big. That's big, Mom."

"It is."

"I made it myself."

I Know

photo from here

"I don't want to do swim class today, Mom."

"Why not?"

"The kick-board part is too hard."

"Well the way to make that easier is to practice."

"No it isn't."

"Yeah, it really is."

"Mom? You don't know everything."

"I know a lot."

"You don't know all the Star Wars guys. You don't know Ponda Baba or Joruus C'baoth or..."

"Point taken. But you're going to swim class."

"Oh, man."

Farewell, Our Pearl

drawing from here

Friends,
I am sorry to report that our sweet cat, Pearl has lost a brief battle with a fast moving cancer. She was a swell kitty and a sweet friend. In her memory, I am linking here to the story of how we met.
We will miss her deeply.
Don't forget to hug your people - the fur ones and the other ones.
Lisa

"Have a great time in heaven, Pearl. You are very beautiful."

Leia, Lately

photo from here

"Mom? Can you come here? They said this lady on the TV is Carrie Fisher."

"Yeah, it is."

"The same Carrie Fisher who is Princess Leia?"

"Yep."

"She doesn't look like Princess Leia."

"She's a little older now."

"What is she doing on the commercial?"

"She's selling a program that helps people to lose weight."

"Mom?"

"Yeah?"

"This is all very confusing."

"Yeah."
