White Flag

I finally did it. I let go of the dream. That's right, I no longer have white bed clothes and towels. I'm still letting that sink in. I've had white linens my entire adult life. To me they represent freshness and cleanliness and I finally had to admit that "fresh" and "clean" aren't words that reflect my current life most of the time. After trying to continue that tradition with a husband, a boy and two large dogs, there were some filthy-ish situations that not even chlorine bleach could reverse.

Today I finally threw away the messed up, once white sheet that we referred to as the Shroud of Turin. I replaced the sheets and comforter cover with something that seemed like it would be more likely to weather the Rosenberg storm. Yes, this is about me buying new sheets but also it's about acceptance. It's one more way I'm letting go of my teeny little perfectionist-OCD-control-freak deal. So you can have the white sheets but I'm keeping my alphabetized spices. (That's just makes good organizational sense.)

  1. I don't have any kids, our dog has been gone for over 10 years, but I have a spouse who has no sense of style. He refuses to use the oh-so-carefully selected matching towels and washcloths. I finally had to let go of the dream of having a color-coded bathroom. It was easier and less messy than shooting him.

Acceptance can be a real struggle for those of us with that extra special perfectionist-OCD-control freak trait.

  2. I too, once wished for white sheets. I even went so far as to install a pure white ceramin floor in my kitchen. (It was the 90's and it's gone now.)

Myu favourite colour for anything - clothing, decor - cars - is now "unidentifiable brown."

    SO MUCH LESS WASHING.

You were brave for going this far Lisa, and that needs to be recognized and commended.

  3. I always like white because you can bleach white. I love bleach. But you're right. Sometimes even bleach can't get the job done.
I'm proud of you, Lisa. You are capable of change.

  4. I do not alphabetize my spices, but my label maker and I are very friendly.
Having dogs (and sons) helps us let go of a lot, doesn't it? I'm even starting to get used to the tumbleweeds of fur that visit every spring.

  6. I color coded towels for my children. They each had their own color. That way they knew which to use, and I knew which one was leaving wet towels on the floor. Then I learned that bleach based bathroom cleaners and colored towels were an ugly, ugly thing. All the towels look like they were tie-dyed. I hate tie-dye. There is no winning when you're a mom.

    1. You can see it a little behind Teddy in the photo - blue comforter cover and a print for the sheets.

  9. Wow, LIsa! Of course I was thinking more dire thoughts and am very happy to see it's 'just' white linens.

Love the 'Shroud of Turin'! And also that you're holding on to alphabetizing the spices.

It's amazing how digging down into any little mundane detail can be a revelation-- and screamingly funny...in the right hands, that is. Your very capable ones, I'll put myself in on a whim.

  13. OMG once again I can so relate to your post. I always loved the shabby chic look, alot of cream and white. My husband was never a fan. Then we had a boy and now I am not a fan either. Darker, hiding colors all the way!!

  15. Oddly enough, in a fit of uncharacteristic optimism, I bought all new white sheets for my bed this weekend.

  16. I think you'll soon feel yourself freer, but keep us posted! I loved the previous color coding idea, but having sets of dark and colored towels in the house, I discovered that that's not such a good idea, either. They can't be washed together, and just complicates the laundry. Lesson learned for me, too!

  17. I am still hanging on to my dream of white sheets, towels and comforters. I have a husband who didn't own one white thing when I met him and a black cat whose fur goes into spastic shedding mode every time she sees white. May I have your courage some day!
