And It's Another Word for Happy

"Mom, you said before that gay was a bad word, right?"

"No. It's a fine word. I said you just don't use it as if it's a bad word, like to take the place of some bad word. Gay is good."

"What does it mean again, exactly?"

"It means when men love other men or women love other women in a couple kind of way. People love who they love and that's a very good thing."

"Like Miss Mary and Miss Belva next door? They're married."

"No, they're sisters. They're not married."

"Oh, you mean like Gavin's dads? Gavin at my school?"

"Exactly."

"Mom? Are you gay?"

"No, I'm not."

"And you're loving a man, that's dad. Okay, so you mean like that guy Jeff Lewis on the Flipping Out show and his boyfriend Gage?"

"Yes. That's right."

"Gay is even in Gage's name, Mom."

"I think that's just a coincidence."

  1. This teacher applauds mom for explaining things clearly and without bigotry. :)

PS. You should hear me deal with the whole using-"gay"-as-a-putdown at school.
Kid: My shoes are so gay.
Me: Seriously? I wasn't aware that shoes could have a sexual identity.
Kid: No! That's not what I mean!
Me: Then express yourself clearly next time.

  2. Heh-heh. I am a big fan of Flipping Out. Sometimes I think that the Bravo channel has done more for gay rights than anything else at this point.

  3. It always made me smile at my kids' preschool to hear a kid say, "If I get gay-married, I'll marry Jeff, but if I get regular married I'll marry Sophia." Hysteria about sexual orientation is not innate.

  4. Of course Bog gets it. And I love that he clarified your man is also dad. So cute.

  5. One time i was having a conversation with my big girls about what gay means and how families come in all shapes and sizes and two people who love each other should be able to get married, blah, blah, blah. I was proud of myself for discussing it calmly and in terms they could understand. At the end, Ella said, "Gay also means really, really happy. Like SpongeBob. Spongebob is totally gay."

All I could say was "Yes, yes he is."
