Yesterday Morning

"Quick into the car. We don't want to be late for school."

"Okay, Mom. Let me just move my backpack over the seat," Bob said as we pulled out of the driveway. Then we hit a bump.

"What was that, Mom?"

"I don't know."

And then I saw her: a big gray cat. She ran up the driveway and settled under the yellow rose bush. I stopped the car and ran to her. She was laying down, breathing hard. I pet her head.

"Little gray kitty, are you okay, Baby?"

She look at me. Her breathing eased and then it seemed to stop.

"Oh no, Kitty. Oh, no. Oh, no. Kitty!"

"Mom, what's going on?"

"Just stay in the car, Bob." I picked up the cat and brought her to the car, resting her in the passenger seat. I dropped Bob at school on the way to the animal hospital.

The tech ushered me into a small room. She checked the cat for a heartbeat. The tech looked up and shook her head.

"She must have been sleeping under our car. I didn't see her."

"I'm so sorry. That's horrible. How would you like us to take care of it?"

"Can we have her cremated? At least we can bury her in the yard next to some other nice animals."

"Sure. I have the form here. She doesn't have a collar or a micro-chip. Do you want to name her, or leave that part blank?"

"Well... she did run to the rose bush, so I guess, Rose?"

"Rose. That's a sweet name. Sign right here."

I pet Rose on the back.

"I'm sorry, Rose. I'm really sorry."

I cried the whole way home. I cried for Rose.

  1. You are just. . .wonderful. Thank you for honoring Rose and life.

  2. Ugh. What a horrible way to start your day. I'm sorry that happened to you.

  3. We have all been there. I'm so sorry. You did the right thing.

  4. Oh, no! Lisa, I'm so very sorry. Rose is at peace but I'm so sorry for the sadness of it all. Take care of yourself today.

  5. Oh sweetie. I'm so sorry... hugs!

  6. Of all people for this to happen to! You are both such loving souls, and how you cared for that hurt cat is what we MOTs call a "Mitzvah."

    I'm so sorry.

  7. Poor Lisa. You did everything you could. Rose knows.

  8. Lisa!! What a way to start the week! Man. But yes, so you in how you dealt with it....with a generous, loving heart. xx

  9. Not your fault. Maybe Rose was ready to go. So kind to take her to the vet and to bury her with your other pets. Hugs. x0 N2

  10. A couple things on this one: (1) You showed great kindness in taking Rose to the vet; (2) As N2 writes, Rose likely led the life she was supposed to live; similarly, she entered your lives for some reason; your challenge is to figure that out and act on it; (3) I empathize; the worst day of my life was when I saw--less than a year ago--Gigi, our lovely little Pekingese mix, hit by a car; the rushing to the vet, the weeping, the inconsolability of it all; there is education to be had in the pain, I think and I pray. Blessings to you,

    1. I'm sorry, Greg. That sounds terrible. Thank you for your kind words. xo

  11. Ugh! So sorry this happened. (sigh)

  12. So sorry this happened to you, at least you were kind enough to take her to the vet.

  13. :( Oh Lisa, I'm so so sorry. Accidents happen to the best of us, and that is exactly what this was. You still showed the utmost compassion that could be given in a situation like this. There's a reason I read this blog. <3

  14. An awful experience, but you handled it with such kindness. I want you over my shoulder, directing me how to proceed with situations.

  15. So sorry. Thank you, too, to the others writing before me who expressed what I wanted to say. Let yourself be comforted.

  16. I'm so sorry this happened to you... and to Rose. I hope if 'lil Bob knows that he is doing okay, too. Love to you.
