The January Window

Lately, I'll find myself sitting down for a minute and then it's suddenly three hours later and I don't know where the time went. Or I can't be bothered to make small decisions so I wear the same dress everyday. (The black dress pictured above - currently going on 6 days.)

I have done the bare minimum it takes to show up for my life: basic hygiene, keeping appointments, mom-things, a few hours of sleep here and there. I decided somewhere around last Tuesday that I am giving myself a free pass for a few days. I'm not folding laundry or grocery shopping or crossing anything off of any lists. My expectations of myself are extremely low and I am just barely reaching them.

I will pull it all together again, but not today. Today is for phoning it in, drinking coffee, and staring out the cold, January window.

  2. To everything there is a season. But...are you okay? This sounds a bit like depression.

  3. I think this is very smart. I've already started overdoing it and I'm asking myself, "WHY?!?" Rock that dress! XO

  5. I should know this but did you grow up in Cali? Because as a native NY'er living here now, I think Californians get a bit of a raw deal in the winter when it comes to having days of weather-related forced unproductivity. It's never really so bad outside that you COULDN'T go out and do something. So we have to create those stretches of time artificially by wearing the same dress and not folding laundry and catching up on Homeland, even if the sun is out.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

    Be gentle with yourself.

  7. Same dress every day! Yes! Especially if I get to look like you in it.

  8. Even though you have higher temps than we of the northern tier, there are still far fewer hours of daylight in winter, even if yours comes in the form of actual sun. It's a time to rest, eat earthy vegetables, and sit by the hearth with your knitting. Your body knows what it needs. I'd still pay attention to signs of depression, but some of us are lucky enough to gain wisdom with time and it could be you're hearing your body better than you have before.

  9. I can't help but sing (in my head) the never ending camp song "black socks". Except substitute dress for socks. :) If you don't happen to know it... "black socks, they never get dirty, the longer you wear them the blacker they get. some day I think I will wash them, but something keeps telling don't do it yet... not yet... not yet"

  10. I wear the same clothes every day and now have imagined the cashiers at Smart 'N Final have taken bets on which set I show up in, the beige set or the black set. I'm convinced I see them exchange glances over the beige one. Beige is no one's friend.

  11. I'm wearing the same outfit as yesterday with one change: I switched cute dress pants for old, sooooo comfy yoga pants. Same sweater, soft knit shirt, and scarf. I just want to fold into it.
