The Pros and Cons of Today's Root Canal

Recovering from a swollen cheek Photo by Bob

Not So Great:

1. The endodontist looked at my x-ray and said, "Whoa. Well, don't worry. It's mostly routine."

2. During the procedure there was an episode of "Guy's Big Bite" playing on a large flat screen behind the dental technician.

3. The sound of Billie Jean on the music system did little to drown out Guy Fieri's description of his fast Asian pickle marinade as "money."

4. The sound of a tiny drill inside my face did little to drown out Guy Fieri's Korean street food pork sandwich taking him on a "trip to Flavor Town."

5. I had a root canal.

Worth Every Dollar of the Co-Pay:

1. Our toothpaste-phobic child is now willing to brush with "awful barf paste" to avoid getting a "head cavity mouth canal like Mama."

  3. Oh those tiny little drills for those tiny little canals. . .

    Brings back HORRIBLE memories.

Like six of them . . .I'm not sure I have any more canals to root.

  5. I've been down that road, had a few root canals... no fun. My dentist loves me very much. As do his kids, who send me birthday cards every year thanking me for helping to pay for their education!

  7. I'm not sure if I feel worse for you about the root canal or the Guy Fieri... :)

  8. Am I still allowed to comment here now that you're big time?

I've never seen "Guy's Big Bite," but it sounds perfect for a root canal.

  9. "Awful barf paste" and "head cavity mouth canal" are much more accurate descriptions of what's really going on. Thank you, Bob, for calling dentists on their euphemisms.

  10. Just found your blog on Blogs of Note and I love. Had me in hysterics! Hope the mouth is feeling a little better. =)

  11. Owie. I've had two. Am hoping you aren't hurting too much today.

Love Bob's comment. I make mine used Mentadent. I have horrible teeth. There will be no bubble gum flavored toothpaste in this house.

  12. I'm totally craving a pork sandwich now. Googling Flavor Town.

  14. If they gave you codeine to take, consider not taking it. When I had my wisdom teeth out, the worst part was the constant nausea from the codeine. On the second day I quit taking it and things started getting better.

You and Bob deserve a milk shake, don't ya think? x0 N2

  15. Just had one two weeks ago, feel your pain sister friend. I had five shots and still wasn't 100% numb...thank G-d for Vicodin!
Congrats on Blog of Note (that Ann is a super publicist)

  16. Ahhhh.... I'm thinking about starting to floss!

  17. Whatever you do, get the cap as soon as you can. I got a root canal a few years ago, but did not have the money for a cap. Well, lo and behold, the root canal weakened and had to be redone. TWO ROOT CANALS IN THE SAME TOOTH. So not fun.

  18. Oh you poor, poor thing... I feel for you. Really.

And gee, your eyebrows look terrific, lady.

  19. Who cares about the root canal? I'm a veteran of them and a dental implant. I'm far more interested in the Barf Paste. And that you are a Blog of Note! You Go Mrs. Rosenberg! Love you!

P.S. Advil works much better for dental pain than the evil vicodin.

  20. Thanks for the Public Service Announcement! I'm going to floss right now because that "head cavity mouth canal" sounds way worse than a root canal.

  21. As I suspected, you are under the best post procedure care in town.

Go, Dr. Bob! And, yes, I am a lesson to my boys as well. I just had a root canal last week, over a crown.

Good times. You should see my boys run to their toothbrushes.

  26. I bet you are glad your tooth is sorted out now.
I went to the dentist last week just for a check up, luckily nothing was wrong.
I don't really mind that much going to see the dentist, its just paying out the money afterwards that i hate.

  29. This post has reminded me...that I'm overdue for a visit to the dentist. Hope you are feeling better. xx

  30. Oh, boy, I'm with you on that "It's almost routine" bit. It's right up there with "Oops!" in either the dentist or the gynecologist's office. And why do they insist on playing food shows in the background? Like I'm feeling like I'm ever gonna want to eat again?

  31. reminds me of acouple of tooth experiences I've had. capped one tooth acouple a years latter it absessed. then a few years after that had the same one-a root canal. ya lots of fun.

  34. Reading the phrase "trip to flavor town" makes me feel like I have a head cavity mouth canal. Also: doctors who say "whoa" or can't control their eyebrows when they read x-rays and reports should be reported or smacked. Or something.

  35. Having a root canal isn't that bad at all, since it will get rid of the pain, and if the operation wasn't done as soon as possible, it will hurt a lot. At my teenage years, I had my first root canal when I felt total pain whenever I drink cold food or liquid. It totally made my cry due to its intensity, with that, my mother brought me to the dentists (Hendersonville, TN-located clinic) to get me checked-up and treat me as soon as possible.

Few check-ups and x-rays later, I went on the operation. If I remembered correctly, it took me just an hour (or less) without any pain. After the whole ordeal, I am very thankful that my tooth isn't sensitive anymore, and days of rolling around in bed in pain was gone, and all thanks to the Hendersonville dentist.

  38. I think that you've written in the most persuasive way to get me to brush my teeth. When I was in college, I had my wisdom teeth removed. That experience and yours have encouraged me to strive to never have the need for a root canal.

  39. Root canal treatment is done when there is no chance of tooth to be saved, and the patient doesn’t want it to be extracted although decayed. It is done to kill the vitality of the tooth and then filling it with mechanical components, and placing a cap over it.I love this kind of post.

  42. Implants can be made of titanium or zirconium. There are pros and cons to each. Traditional dentistry tends to favor titanium because of its longer track record and familiarity. It also has a very low percentage of patients being sensitive to it. In some cases, zirconium can darken the gums in esthetic areas. Also, some critics of titanium don’t like the idea of any metal in the mouth. If increased esthetics or non-metallic implants are your preference, zirconium implants may be your preferred option.
