Try Cycle

With the station wagon back in the shop again, Bob and I decided we would ride our bikes to pre-school in the morning. We were doing fine for the first half a block.

"Mom? I can't do this anymore. My bike is tired."

"You can do it, babe. Just keep moving."

"I think you should push me."

"I can't push you. I have to ride my own bike." We rode another block and stopped at the stop sign. "Okay let's go."

"It's too bumpy right here. I'm scared."

"You're fine, Bob. Be brave."

"I can't be brave. I'm too scared."

"Just keep moving. Being brave is being afraid and doing it anyway. You're doing great." As I quietly high fived myself for turning our bike ride into a "teachable moment," I heard a crash and saw that The Brave One had fallen over in a driveway.

"Mom!"

"Come on, honey. You're okay. Now get back up on your bike, and you get to be... um... even more brave."

"I'm not interested."

"I don't blame you."

It was a long ride.

  1. Aaah this reminds me of cycling to school when I was a kid, must have been about 6 years old. I thought it would be a great idea but I didn't realise how.damn.far it was!! I was exhausted by the time we got there.

Well done with the attempt at bravery teaching ;-)

  5. I'm with DG. It's good to have teachable moments. I'm just wondering who's being taught what.

  8. i'm proud of him AND you. my girls wont go near a bike (7 years old!) due to their lack of... um, bravery or endurance. either way, i'm not the role model they need to exemplify those qualities.

  11. Bob! Eventually he'll love to bike, but maybe not to school. Try an icecream shop next time and see how brave he gets. Lol

  12. I wonder if Bob quietly high fived himself for turning the bike ride into a "teachable moment." (Wonderfully told tale!)

  19. He told you he just wasn't interested.

How many times have I thought that, but never had the permission to say it.

What a wonderful life he has....
